BJP banks on Bhatt again to maintain stability in Uttarakhand

PURNIMA BISHT/Dehradun

The Bharatiya Janata Party has played its most trusted card by retaining Mahendra Bhatt to lead the party in the State, the move that many in political circles were expecting. Bhatt will once again head the party in Uttarakhand as he filed his nomination unopposed on Monday in the presence of chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. He is expected to formally take charge as the BJP’s State president on Tuesday.

The decision, while anticipated, carries strategic significance. It marks a notable deviation from the BJP’s usual ‘one person, one post’ principle, as Bhatt is also currently a sitting Rajya Sabha MP since April 2, 2024. His reinstatement indicates the central leadership’s clear preference for continuity and trust in tested leadership over introducing a new face at a politically sensitive time.

Several names were in discussion for the post, including Aditya Kothari, Vinod Chamoli, Jyoti Prasad Gairola, Madan Kaushik, Khajan Das, Asha Nautiyal and Deepti Rawat Bhardwaj. However, the party ultimately chose to go with Bhatt again, signalling its intent to avoid internal disruptions as it prepares for the upcoming Panchayat elections and looks ahead to the 2027 Vidhan Sabha polls.

Bhatt’s political trajectory reflects both grassroots engagement and organisational loyalty. He served as an MLA from Nandprayag from 2002 to 2007, lost the seat in the subsequent election and made a comeback in 2017 by winning from Badrinath. In the 2022 Vidhan Sabha elections, he faced defeat again. Despite this, the BJP appointed him State president on July 30, 2022, replacing Madan Kaushik and later nominated him to the Rajya Sabha. His continued elevation despite mixed electoral fortunes suggests the party values his organisational skills and internal influence.

Further, the good results achieved by the BJP in Uttarakhand under Bhatt’s leadership cannot be ignored. In the recent Lok Sabha elections, the party won all five seats in the State and it also performed exceptionally well in the municipal body elections, securing majority across several regions. These wins seem to have reinforced the central leadership’s confidence in his ability to lead the party into future contests. The timing of the decision also aligns with the party’s broader political calculations. In recent months, Uttarakhand has seen a series of controversies that have tested the BJP’s image, from the Rishikesh MLA’s alleged remarks targeting Pahadi people in the Vidhan Sabha to legal cases involving multiple party leaders.

The reservation issue ahead of the Panchayat elections had also given the opposition a reason to target the BJP. Against this backdrop, reinstating Bhatt appears to be a move aimed at maintaining internal balance and projecting steady leadership. The second term comes with both responsibility and pressure for Bhatt and the party is clearly counting on him to handle sensitive social issues, control internal dissent and continue its electoral momentum through a volatile period.

With the political climate in Uttarakhand demanding careful navigation, his experience and rapport with the party members will be crucial. By choosing Bhatt once again, the BJP has sent a clear message that at a time of rising political challenges and upcoming electoral tests, it is relying on familiarity, proven leadership and organisational discipline to maintain its stronghold in Uttarakhand.
