BIS urges consumers to buy hallmarked jewellery for purity

Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Dehradun branch, organised a jewellers’ awareness programme in Bageshwar the objective behind which was to make the local goldsmiths aware about the latest developments in hallmarking, quality standards and compliance procedures.

Presiding over the programme, the director, BIS, Dehradun, Saurabh Tiwari explained the importance of BIS certification and the hallmarking process of gold jewellery in detail. He added that the purity of gold is guaranteed through hallmarking while urging the consumers to check the Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) number, carat and BIS logo while buying jewellery.

The assistant director, BIS, Dehradun, Saurabh Kumar Chourasiya  and the hallmark representative, BIS, Shrikant Mishra also discussed in detail the operation of hallmarking centres, new HUID-based hallmarking system and mandatory hallmarking on jewellery from 14 carat to 24 carat.

Inaugurating the programme, the MLA, Kapkot, Suresh Gadhiya stressed on consumer awareness and the responsibility of jewellers, urging them to buy and sell only the hallmarked jewellery.  The Bageshwar Nagar Palika Parishad chairman, Suresh Khetwal along with the president of Goldsmith Association, Bageshwar, Paras Verma and 90 traders and jewellers of the district was present.
BIS urged consumers to download the BIS Care app, available on Google Play Store and Apple Store, to verify the authenticity of BIS-marked products.
