The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) took action against the use of non-ISI marked polyvinyl chloride (PVC) geomembranes in the tunnel waterproofing work of Rail Vikas Nigam Limited’s (RVNL) Package 7A project.
The BIS Dehradun director and head Saurabh Tiwari informed that BIS received a complaint regarding the use of unmarked PVC geomembranes by contractor Max – HES JV. Such products fall under Indian Standard IS 15909:2020 which are regulated through the Geotextiles (Quality Control) Order, 2022. Since ISI mark in these products are mandatory, a team took action against them as per the instructions from the BIS headquarters in New Delhi.
Tiwari formed an inspection team under the supervision of joint director Shyam Kumar and reached the RVNL’s project site in Rudraprayag on Wednesday. They found out that 46 rolls of 2 millimetre thick, 2.1-metre wide and 20-metre long PVC geomembranes, imported from Italy by the company SOPREMA, were being used without the required ISI marking.
The team seized all the products and warn the officials concerned against using such products. Tiwari also urged all construction agencies, project managers, importers and consumers to strictly comply with quality control orders and ensure the use of BIS-certified products. Consumers can verify product certification through the BIS Care mobile app, he added.
