The police arrested a Bangladeshi citizen living in Dehradun with fake identity documents along with a woman from Tyuni who was staying with him as his wife after allegedly helping him obtain forged Aadhaar and PAN cards along with other identity cards.

Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh said that the police acted under Operation Kalnemi against those living in the State with false identities. He said that the Nehru Colony police and Local Intelligence Unit of Dehradun detained the two on November 20 after receiving information that a Bangladeshi man had crossed the border illegally and was staying in the area. During questioning, the man disclosed his real name as Mamun Hasan, son of Ali Yaseen, a resident of Mujibnagar, Meherpur district in Bangladesh.

The woman identified herself as Reena Chauhan, daughter of Vishwajeet Singh from Tyuni, Dehradun, as per Singh. He stated that Chauhan arranged fake Indian identity cards in the name of her former husband Sachin Chauhan for Hasan, enabling both to live in Dehradun as husband and wife. “She told police that she met Hasan on Facebook. He visited India on a tourist visa in 2019, 2020 and 2021 to meet her. After his visa expired during the Covid period, he returned to Bangladesh and later brought Reena there by illegally crossing the border. Both returned to India again in 2022 after entering Bangladesh illegally. Hasan worked as a bouncer in a Dehradun club using the forged identity of ‘Sachin’,” the SSP said.

He informed that the police have registered a case against both under Sections 420, 467, 468, 471 and 120B of the Indian Penal Code, Section 3 of the Passport (Entry into India) Act, 1920 and Section 14 of the Foreigners Act. Police recovered several forged identity documents and other items from their possession. Those who assisted in preparing fake documents are also under investigation, he added. The SSP informed that under Operation Kalnemi, Dehradun police have taken action against 16 Bangladeshi citizens found illegally residing in the district. Nine have been deported and seven have been sent to jail after registration of cases so far, he added
