Authorities learn of accident victims being Covid positive after cremation
Two locals who recently died in a road mishap turned out to be Covid positive. However, this came to light after the cremation of the duo was conducted.
Two people hailing from Haridwar died in a road accident on Monday. The post mortem was conducted and samples collected, after which the bodies were handed over to the family members. The two were cremated shortly afterwards. However, on Wednesday, the sample report of the two came positive for Covid-19.
All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Rishikesh, PRO Harish Thapliyal said that according to central guidelines, bodies are handed over to family members after post mortem. He said that he was not aware of the cremation of the two persons in question.
Meanwhile, Dr Ajay of Haridwar health department said that the Covid test of the two people was conducted at AIIMS in Rishikesh which is outside Haridwar district. The bodies were handed over to the family members and were later cremated. Efforts are underway to sanitise the area and isolate the primary contacts of the two deceased, he added.
The Haridwar Tehsildar Ashish Ghildiyal said that the two deceased testing positive for Covid-19 came to light on Wednesday. Had this been known earlier, the cremation would have taken place according to the guidelines for Covid positive cases.
