The Regional Transport Office (RTO) of Dehradun will launch a special drive against riders and pillion riders who do not wear helmets while riding two-wheelers. The regional transport officer (enforcement) Shailesh Tiwari said that the Transport department has penalised a total of 4,892 two-wheeler riders from January to November for not wearing a helmet. He said that as per the data of the department, a total of 86 accidents of two-wheeler vehicles occurred from January to November this year in Dehradun out of which, 24 died and 68 sustained injuries.

Tiwari said that in most of these cases, riders were not wearing helmets that caused serious head injuries and even death in many cases. He said that despite imposing challans, many continue to violate the basic rule of wearing a helmet while riding a two-wheeler vehicle. Since the number of such vehicles has increased in recent years, it has also increased the potential risk of accidents which generally proved to be fatal if the rider rides without a helmet.

Tiwari said that the department wants to raise awareness among people rather than just imposing penalties considering which, such rule violators are being given counselling in the counselling room of the RTO on Rajpur Road. He said that the transport officers of Dehradun, Haridwar, Tehri and Uttarkashi have been directed to start checking campaigns in their respective areas against two-wheeler riders not wearing helmets.

The enforcement team of RTO has also been taking cognisance of issues faced by commuters in public transport vehicles and the department would also start major campaigns against them too, added Tiwari.
