Sports minister Rekha Arya said that India has secured the hosting rights for the Commonwealth Games in 2030 and the government will strive to ensure that Uttarakhand plays a role in hosting the event. She said this during the inauguration of the Sher Singh Karki Memorial Sports Competition in Muwani, Pithoragarh, on Friday, which featured rural teams from across the district.

During her address, Arya emphasised that sports facilities are being developed even in remote areas of the State. The State government’s goal is to nurture national and international champions from every village in Uttarakhand, as this is essential for establishing the region as a hub for sports.

She highlighted the various initiatives taken by the State government to foster a sporting culture, which will secure the future of athletes and inspire the youth to pursue careers in sports. “Most champions in athletics come from rural areas and this competition is a significant step in that direction,” she stated.

On this occasion, Arya also inspected the construction of a sports ground and instructed the officials of the implementing agency to ensure its completion within the designated timeframe and with high quality. She emphasised that this sports ground will play a crucial role in nurturing rural talent and promoting them to national and international levels, stating that it should be completed by the end of this year.
