Anganwadi workers express concern over rotten eggs for children

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

Anganwadi workers have expressed concern regarding the delivery of rotten and worm-infested eggs meant for children enrolled in Anganwadi centres. Anganwadi workers association president Rekha Negi informed that spoiled eggs were supplied to an Anganwadi centre in the Raipur area of Dehradun with many showing signs of worm infestation. She also said that reports indicated the contract for supply of the eggs was given to a company from another State.

She stated that this situation raises the issue of the Women Empowerment and Child Development (WECD) department’s accountability. These eggs are intended to support nutrition, but they could affect the children’s health, she added.

Meanwhile, the Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) in Raipur, Dehradun, has issued a notice to Anganwadi supervisor seeking explanation for accepting worm-infested eggs meant for children enrolled in Anganwadi centres. In a letter to the supervisor, the CDPO stated that the spoiled eggs were received despite past instructions to not accept any materials without verification. Responding to this, Negi said that action should be taken against those responsible for supplying the substandard eggs, rather than the Anganwadi workers or supervisors.
