The four-day long All India Squash Open Championship came to end in Gurukul Kangri Vishwavidyalaya. In the boys category from 11 to 19 years and girls under 15 and 17 category, final matches were played in Gurukul Kangri Vishwavidyalaya stadium. The top three position holders were given awards and cash prizes. The Urban Development minister Madan Kaushik and vice chancellor of the university professor Roop Kishore Shastri presented the cash prizes.
Speaking on the occasion the Urban Development Minister Madan Kaushik said that after the formation of the state of Uttarakhand much progress has been achieved in the field of sports. Many local talents have secured their position in the national competitions and won honour for India at the international level. Post state formation, they got better opportunities to showcase their talent. He added that Gurukul Kangri Vishwavidyalaya is famous for hockey in Haridwar and now it has added sports like squash in its kitty organising a national level event which is praiseworthy. He said that the university’s vice chancellor was an inspiration for sports persons who had taken sports to new heights.
Presiding as the guest of honour, the chairman Shivaliknagar municipal council, Rajiv Sharma said that players are always an asset of any state and with their talent the state and the country get honour. The squash championship saw participation of players from Delhi, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh and other regions. The organising secretary of the championship Ajay Malik told this correspondent that total of Rs 1.25 lakh was distributed as cash prizes among the players who won positions in the championship.
