Wednesday, 30 March 2022 | PNS | Dehradun

The Regional Transport Office (RTO) of Dehradun has resumed the practice of conducting driving tests for the renewal applicants whose driving license has expired for more than a year. The regional transport officer (administration) Dinesh Chandra Pathoi informed that the Central Government had given exemption on the validity of vehicles-related documents due to the Covid-19 pandemic in the past two years. Documents like driving licenses were being renewed in the RTO premises so far but since the government has removed all such exemptions, a person whose driving license has expired for more than a year has to reappear for the test in Jhajhra where RTO conducts its all driving tests. He said that the transport office has been conducting tests of the applicants of the new driving licenses in the past two years and now the applicant with over a year old expired license will also have to clear the test to get the license from April. He said that about 15-20 applicants arrive in RTO premises for the renewal of the licenses and this number will possibly increase next month after many will get to know about the mandatory test for license renewal. Besides this, Pathoi also informed that since all restrictions related to Covid-19 have been lifted by the government, the RTO is also gearing up to increase the number of slots for learning licenses to 150 from 125. He said that the administration will gradually increase the slots of learning license and permanent license as RTO is yet to finish the backlog that occurred during the Covid period.
