The State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) will conduct a workshop on Tuesday where students of various colleges and universities will express their thoughts about increasing substance abuse in Uttarakhand. Recently, the commission held a State level meeting in which she instructed the officials concerned to draft guidelines to restrict substance abuse among children as well as facilitate rehabilitation facilities to addicted children. Considering this, the commission decided to conduct this workshop as a part of making guidelines in coordination with students.
According to the chairperson of the commission, Usha Negi, substance abuse has increased exponentially in the last few years in the State among school and college students. This makes it crucial to know the viewpoint of the students who can help the officials concerned to understand how students are actually approached by or connect with drug dealers, stated Negi. She informed that the commission has invited students from around 12 universities and four colleges of Uttarakhand to participate in the workshop.
Moreover, the commission has also invited those students and youngsters who were once addicted to drugs but now, they have made full recovery. The representatives from the various departments will also attend the workshop to take note of students’ thoughts and discuss substance abuse related issues in order to prepare appropriate guidelines. “The commission has directed the departments concerned to draft guidelines only after considering the recommendations of the students and such youngsters who have gone through the traumatic experience of drug abuse. We want officials to prepare and execute proper guidelines to restrict drug abuse across the State and involvement of students is necessary for effective results in the long run,” stated Negi.
