The Doon Valley Mahanagar Udyog Vyapar Mandal (DVMUVM) intends to meet mayor Saurabh Thapliyal within the next few days regarding the removal of the Sunday market from the Rangers Ground. This market has been negatively impacting local shopkeepers in Paltan Bazaar. Recently, DVMUVM president Pankaj Masson voiced concerns about the market, stating that it has become an issue for many people. He said that numerous shopkeepers and customers have complained about the traffic congestion it causes, which hinders access to the area on Sundays. Masson pointed out that the market’s central location does not provide adequate parking, leading many to park on the streets and exacerbating traffic problems. Further, the lower prices available at the market are attracting customers away from Paltan Bazaar, resulting in decreased sales for local shopkeepers. Due to these concerns, they recently held a meeting with the mayor to seek action on the issue. Masson said that at that time, the mayor suggested they are already exploring options to tackle the situation and are considering potential sites outside the city for relocating the market.
Regarding the current status of the Sunday market, Masson said that during the last meeting, the mayor stated that the market would be set up at the specified location for three Sundays before being dismantled. At that time, he asked them to wait for these three Sundays to pass. Following the conclusion of this period, they decided to meet with the mayor again within two to three days to inquire about the next steps regarding the market’s removal from the city centre. He expressed that if the mayor responds positively and takes action to eliminate the market, they would be satisfied; however, if their request is denied, they will need to consider following plans according to it.
