MCH urges citizens to avoid single-use plastics during summer seva activities

PIONEER NEWS SERVICE | Haridwar

The Haridwar municipal commissioner Nandan Kumar has appealed to citizens to avoid the use of single-use plastic during social service activities such as distributing water and cold beverages to commuters in the summer. He urged people to opt for biodegradable cups or reusable utensils and to ensure a proper-sized dustbin is placed at the distribution site so that no passerby is forced to litter.

During his inspection visit on Friday to key city locations Devpura Chowk, Agrasain Chowk, Rishikul Chowk and Ranipur Mod, he observed that while many individuals and service-oriented groups were offering cold water, sharbat and other refreshments to provide relief from the scorching heat, they were mostly using plastic disposables like cups, bottles and poly packs. He appreciated the intent behind such selfless acts but raised concern over the careless use of plastic, which was leading to visible waste on roads and public spaces.

The commissioner noted that in most areas, there was no provision for proper waste disposal, which worsens the problem. He said that the accumulation of plastic waste not only compromises cleanliness but also threatens environmental balance. He has appealed to all residents to act responsibly and support the city’s mission to become plastic-free. Citizens are encouraged to adopt environmentally sensitive practices and take personal responsibility to keep the surroundings clean, Kumar said. He also issued necessary instructions to all officials concerned to take immediate action wherever required to address the issue effectively.
