PIONEER NEWS SERVICE/ Dehradun
Atulya Ganga Trust, an initiative of the armed forces veterans, dedicated to the sustainable rejuvenation of River Ganga will undertake a three-day Plastic Eradication Kar Sewa from June 5 in Uttarkashi district.
The drive was flagged off by General officer Commanding in Chief (GoC-in C) Central Command, Lieutenant General Anindya Sengupta at Lucknow on June 02. The ceremony was attended by the founder of the Trust Gopal Sharma and others.
The initiative is being supported by the Uttarakhand government, Border Roads Organisation and Nehru Institute of Mountaineering.
“The mission spans afforestation, pollution mapping including measuring the presence of microplastics and raising public awareness to restore the river. Atulya Ganga volunteers will assemble at Uttarkashi where they will physically collect all the plastic waste littered on the roadside and on mountain slopes between Gangotri and Harsil. The collected waste will be handed over to Urban Local Bodies for further disposal. Through this initiative, the NGO aims to cultivate a mind-set amongst the citizens and government machinery to recognize the urgent requirement of promoting sustainable practices to protect nature,’’ a communique from the Army said.
