One Nation, One Election against the spirit of democracy: Congress

PIONEER NEWS SERVICE/ Dehradun

The chief spokesperson of Uttarakhand Congress, Garima Dasauni has said that the idea of One Nation One Election is impractical in the present context as the population of the country has exceeded 1.5 billion. She said that simultaneous holding of the elections will also result in many constitutional complexities.

The Constitution of India grants freedom of governance and tenure to the Union and the State and simultaneous holding of elections can prove to be a blow to the federal structure of the country. Dasauni pointed out that in case of untimely collapse of any State government, two options are available, one imposition of President’s rule and another to wait for the elections for the next general elections and both these situations are not good for democracy.

The Congress leader said that simultaneous elections can result in a situation where the local issues will become redundant and the national issues will dominate.

She claimed that a level playing field will not be available for the opposition parties. Dasauni said that the ruling party has more resources and in the case of simultaneous elections the opposition will be in a position of disadvantage in campaign and public outreach.

She said that the idea of one election will also have an adverse impact on political and cultural diversity and push the country in the direction of unitary administration.
