IIT Roorkee sacks professor over sexual abuse charge

PIONEER NEWS SERVICE/ Roorkee

In latest news from Uttarakhand, a senior professor of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Roorkee, has been sacked after the disciplinary proceedings against him over a sexual harassment complaint concluded.

As per press note released by the institution, Zillur Rahman (60) has been dismissed from the service. Confirming the action, a senior public relation officer of the institution, Sonika Srivastav said that the institution does not compromise with the highest standards of professional ethics and institutional integrity it remains committed to.

She further said that this was the first such case involving a faculty member.  Notably, the action followed a sexual harassment charge a research scholar doing a PhD under him had levelled against him in January. Importantly, over 15 research scholars were studying under him, the institution said.
