Lack of mutual respect & communication major factors for rising divorces
A combination of factors like the lack of communication, integrity, intolerance, selfish approach and trust issues along with legal aspects are increasingly encouraging married couples to separate and seek a divorce. Experts say that there has been a considerable increase in divorce rates in recent years. Nowadays couples grow apart in marriages and sometimes they simply don’t get along anymore.
Advocate Atul Pundir said, “Divorce cases are rising in Uttarakhand. About 15 to 20 cases per day are filed in the court. There are a number of reasons for the increase of divorce cases. Lack of understanding, intolerance, family interference and influence of social media are factors which influence such cases. Apart from this improper implementation of the law also encourages couples to separate. To prevent such a situation, couples must know the moral values and comprehend each others’ value. Before making any decision, the law implementation agency must do a detailed investigation of the particular divorce case. This may send a good message to the society and help in decreasing the rate of divorce cases.”
Clinical psychologist Mukul Sharma said, “Earlier the rate of divorce cases was less as compared to recent years. Instead of adjusting, the new generation thinks it’s very easy to part ways. However, integrity, lack of communication and respect, educational aspects and dual earning are the main reasons of divorce between couples. In 2023 so far, 39 out of out 0f 1,000 are seeking divorce as compared to 2018 when 23 out of 1,000 were seeking divorce.”
He further said that to prevent divorce couples must understand each other before marriage. Couples must resolve the issue of communication breakdown and have some support system they can use to share problems.
The Uttarakhand State Commision for Women secretary Kamini Gupta said that there has been a rise in general in divorce cases in Uttarakhand. The age factor, education, lack of communication plus trust and ego problems are the number of reasons behind couples opting for divorce. To prevent this, the couples must communicate with each other and try to resolve the problems together. Before filing for divorce, couples must go to a marriage counsellor to resolve issues, she added.
