In latest news from Dehradun, the State agriculture and farmers welfare minister Ganesh Joshi met the representatives of the farmers’ union in his assembly office. During the meeting, the farmers’ representatives served the minister with a five-point charter of demands. The minister said that the farmers of Haridwar district had borne the maximum brunt of the rain-triggered calamities this year. The farmers’ representatives expressed anger over alleged irregularities in the survey done at the behest of the State government and this was followed by the minister’s assurance that a team of departmental and revenue officers would conduct survey again in the areas that figured in the irregularity allegations. The minister also ordered construction of embankment on the river Sonali and said that the embankment being constructed would end the farmers’ suffering during the flood in the river.  Joshi further said that the State government had so far handed over about Rs 35 crore to the flood-affected farmers by way of compensation. He directed the State agriculture secretary to ensure that the DM of each district meets the farmers once a month and redresses their grievances on priority basis.
