8 feared dead after bus falls down gorge in Pauri district

At least eight persons are feared dead after a bus carrying about 45 members of a marriage party fell down a deep gorge in the Dhumakot area of Pauri district late on Tuesday evening. The mishap is reported to have occurred near Timri village about 70 kilometres from Dhumakot at about 8 PM. While teams of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) along with the police and district administration officials left for the accident site to conduct rescue and relief operations, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami reached the disaster control room in Dehradun to check the status of the situation. Accurate information about the fatalities and injuries had not been communicated by officials till the time of this report being filed as the rescue and relief efforts were still underway.

According to sources, a bus carrying about 45 persons attending a marriage was plying from Laldhang in Haridwar to Kadagaon when the mishap occurred. As soon as information about the accident was relayed, SDRF teams from Srinagar, Kotdwar, Satpuli and Rudrapur departed for the site of the mishap to conduct rescue and relief operations. Sources informed that the site of the mishap is distant and the darkness was also affecting the pace of rescue and relief efforts. Meanwhile, CM Dhami reached the State Emergency Operations Centre in Dehradun to ascertain the status of the mishap and rescue efforts. Expressing deep grief at the loss of lives, he talked to the district officials and directed them to ensure swift rescue and relief. He said that the local villagers were also assisting in the efforts.
