66- member team to inspect election expenses

A vigilance team too has been formed

Following the directives of the Election Commission of India, a flying squad has been formed for Haridwar Lok Sabha constituency to keep an eye on the electoral expenses made by the contesting candidates. This flying squad comprises 66 officials. Besides, the district election officer has also constituted a local vigilance team for keeping a tab on the expenses of the candidates.

The income tax department has also put the bank accounts of the candidates on surveillance. It is learnt that the income and the expenses of the candidates would be monitored and if any anomaly is found between the two, the income tax department would pass on the same to the election commission of India. If any type of mismatch is found in the information given by the candidate along with the nomination form and in annual income tax return, it may cost the candidate dear, an income tax officer said.

In the matter of a candidate having contested election earlier, mapping between the information given by him about his movable and immovable assets and the income earlier and the information given of the same at present is also being done by the department. The documents related to the properties as attached to the nomination forms   are also being reviewed. Non- filing of income tax returns by some candidates would result in theirs being slapped with show- cause notice, said the officers.
