5 family members killed after car falls off road

Bride-to-be & kin among those killed while returning from shopping for marriage

Five members of the same family including a young lady scheduled to get married later this month, died on the spot after the car they were travelling in fell off the road about 250 metres down the mountainside on the national highway near Devprayag on Sunday. The accident took place near Safed Pahad in Tota Ghati area at about 6:30 AM in Tehri district, said the police.

The five deceased have been identified as Pinky Rana (25), Pratap Singh (42), Bhagirathi Singh (37), Vijay Singh (14), Manju Singh (11) – all from Baan village in Tharali area of Chamoli district.

Pinky’s wedding was scheduled for May 12 and she and others were going back to her village from Meerut after shopping for the wedding when the fatal incident took place, said the police. On being informed about the mishap, the Devprayag police and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel reached the site and retrieved the bodies. The bodies were sent to Srinagar hospital. Meanwhile, governor lieutenant general (retd) Gurmit Singh and chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami have expressed grief at the deaths caused in the mishap.
