Former chief minister and senior Congress leader Harish Rawat held a symbolic fast outside the gate of the building of the Uttarakhand Vidhan Sabha in Bharadisain, Gairsain on Saturday. Rawat and his supporters were stopped by the police and administration when they tried to enter the Vidhan Sabha premises. On being stopped Rawat and other leaders sat on Dharna and observed a fast for one hour. Later Rawat said that the State government is consistently ignoring Gairsain which is a symbol of Statehood agitation and aspiration of the people of the State. He said that the State government failed to hold a single session in Gairsain in the last two years. Rawat said that Uttarakhandiyat and Gairsain were the two major subjects which the Congress government headed by him worked on. He criticised the chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and speaker Ritu Khanduri for preventing him from holding a fast in Gairsain Vidhan Sabha.

The former speaker of Uttarakhand assembly Govind Singh Kunjwal, the former Rajya Sabha MP Pradip Tamta, former Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Ganesh Godiyal, president of Chamoli Congress Mukesh Negi and others accompanied Rawat.

The PCC president Karan Mahara condemned the Dhami government for adopting repressive measures for preventing the former CM from holding a peaceful Dharna in Gairsain. He told the media-persons in Dehradun that the State government is hurting the sentiments of statehood activists and people of the State by not organising assembly session in Gairsain. He said that not even a single minister went to Gairsain to hoist the national flag in Gairsain on Republic Day this year which shows the apathy the government has for Gairsain.
