PIONEER NEWS SERVICE/ Dehradun

The doctors of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Rishikesh have successfully removed a 35 kg bone tumour from the leg of a 27 year-old male patient.

The patient, Salman from Sambhal district of Uttar Pradesh was suffering from slow growing bone tumour for the last six years.

However in last six months the tumour gradually grew to an alarming size making it difficult for him to sit, stand, or even perform daily activities. After seeking opinion and treatment at multiple hospitals in Moradabad and Delhi without success, he visited AIIMS -Rishikesh.

After thorough investigations, the doctors of the premier health centre decided to perform a high-risk, complex surgery to remove the tumour. The surgery was performed on June 9 and it involved meticulous planning and involvement from multiple specialties.

Team was led by Orthopaedic surgeon of AIIMS Rishikesh, Dr Mohit Dhingra. “The surgery was highly challenging due to the tumour’s unprecedented size and weight, which was later confirmed to be 34.7 kg after removal. The sheer size of the tumour also made MRI imaging difficult before the operation hence, angiography was done prior to surgery for abnormal vascularisation and vessels. Post-surgery, Salman is recovering well in the ward and is expected to be discharged soon,’’ Dr Dhingra said.

The executive director of AIIMS Rishikesh Dr Meenu Singh and medical superintendent, B Satya Shri have congratulated the doctors for the successful surgery.
