1471 vehicles fined, 118 impounded in New Year safety drive

Acting on the directions of chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, the Transport department organised a special checking campaign from December 30 and January 1 as part of its safety drive for the New Year celebrations. During this campaign, 1,471 vehicles were challaned (fined) and 118 vehicles were impounded in the Dehradun, Haridwar, Tehri and Uttarkashi districts under the Dehradun region.

Regional transport officer (Enforcement and Road Safety) for the Dehradun Division, Anita Chamola said that to ensure the safety of tourists visiting Uttarakhand for the New Year and to control accidents, the CM convened a meeting on December 30. She directed all departments to implement necessary security measures for tourist safety. Following this, the Transport department conducted a special checking campaign throughout the day and night from December 30 to January 1, 2026. 

The department deployed 41 enforcement teams, including 21 in Dehradun district and 18 in Haridwar district, consisting of 150 enforcement officers and personnel. Chamola said that she also participated in the checking campaign. She said that out of the 1,471 vehicles issued a Challan, 292 were in Dehradun, 151 in Vikasnagar, 213 in Rishikesh, 350 in Haridwar, 346 in Roorkee, Uttarkashi 38 and 81 in Tehri. Additionally, from the 118 vehicles seized, 20 were in Dehradun, eight in Vikasnagar, six in Rishikesh, 45 in Haridwar, 36 in Roorkee, one in Uttarkashi  and two in Tehri.

Chamola said that up to November of the last financial year, a total of 75,921 challans and 4,595 seized vehicles had been recorded, with a penalty of Rs 13.99 crore collected. This year, however, the figures have risen dramatically to 101,004 challans, 6,463 seized vehicles and Rs 15.96 crore in penalties collected within the division. Dehradun district had the highest number of challans, totalling 49,220, followed closely by Haridwar district with 44,836 challans. Additionally, Haridwar district recorded the highest number of seized vehicles and collected a penalty of Rs 7.79 crore.
