13 dead, 2 injured in road accident in Chakrata

PM announces ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each for kin of deceased & Rs 50k each for the injured

Thirteen people were killed and at least two were injured after a utility vehicle carrying them fell into a gorge in Chakrata Tehsil of Dehradun district on Sunday morning. The Dehradun superintendent of police (Rural) Swatantra Kumar Singh informed that the vehicle was carrying a total of 15 people including 10 males and five females from Baila village in Chakrata Tehsil and was headed to Vikasnagar.

According to him, the driver of the vehicle apparently lost control, causing it to fall off the road and down the mountainside within 100 metres from their point of departure at around 8:10 AM. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep grief at the road accident. He also announced an ex-gratia of Rs two lakh each for the kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 each for those who were injured in the incident.

Earlier, teams of police and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) arrived at the accident scene to retrieve 13 dead bodies and rescue two injured people. People who were found dead on the scene include 11-year-old Taniya Singh, three teenagers- 13-year-old Anjali Singh, 15-year-old Kajal Singh and 18-year old Isha Chauhan and nine adults including eight men and one woman.

The police informed that the injured passengers including a six year old boy Rithik Singh and 29-year old Gajendra Tomar were immediately sent to the nearby hospital and are currently under treatment. Meanwhile, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the mishap.
