Ten persons were killed in two separate road accidents in the State in Udham Singh Nagar and Tehri districts on Thursday night and Friday. The first accident occurred late on Thursday night when a car carrying five people fell into the Sharda river in the Khatima area of Udham Singh Nagar, said the police circle officer of Khatima, Vir Singh. He told The Pioneer that the car was carrying a woman travelling along with three children, aged six, eight and 14, and a driver when the car fell into the river. “The accident possibly occurred around 10 PM on Thursday night and locals noticed them after an hour in the river. It is possible that they drowned and died there. The police arrived at the spot around 11:30 PM soon after getting the information,” said Singh. Talking about the probable cause of the accident, he said, “The road near the accident spot is quite narrow so even slight disturbance can cause an accident there. It is possible the driver was overspeeding due to which the car fell into the river after he failed to control it. It is also possible that a wild animal came in front of the car due to which it went off the road and fell into the river as it is also usually common there. These are the potential causes that possibly led to accident according to us. The police do not suspect any foul play but we have started the investigation in the case to figure out the cause of the accident.” He said that the police have also sent the bodies for post-mortem and will take further steps on the basis of reports and evidence collected in the investigation.

The second accident occurred on Friday evening near Kothiyara in Tehri when a car carrying five people including four women and one man fell into a deep gorge near the Sendul-Konthi-Kireth route. The caraccident occurred on Friday evening near Kotiyada in Tehri when a car fell into about 130-metre deep gorge.  A police team reached the location after receiving information about the accident.
