10-day long Dharohar fest to start from today

Thursday, 28 October 2021 | PNS | Dehradun

A 10-day long festival- Dharohar is being organised in Dehradun with the aim to provide a platform to local folk artistes and artisans who have struggled to present their art and craft to the public since the Covid-19 pandemic hit Uttarakhand. This festival is being organised by Sister’s Combines in association with Rural Entrepreneurship for Art and Cultural Heritage (REACH) from October 28 to November 6.

Addressing a Press conference here on Wednesday, the organisers of the event said that many folk artistes and artisans are in financial crisis due to loss of their means of income because of various restrictions imposed by the government to contain Covid-19.  “Various artistes and craftsmen have been unemployed for about two years due to Covid. Most of the craftsmen used to sell their products through fairs in various places to make their products reachable to the public but it could not be possible during the pandemic. This is the reason we decided to give such artists a platform to reach the public here with their arts and products this festive season,” stated one of the organisers Buddhinath Mishra.

Another organiser Sunil Verma informed that the event is being organised at Rangers Ground in Dehradun which will be inaugurated by cabinet minister Subodh Uniyal and MLA Khajan Das on Thursday at 4 PM. He said that the event will start with Jagar and various performances by groups of Garhwali folk artistes, dance groups and classical dance besides other live performances will be presented throughout the event.  “The fair in the festival will start from 11 AM and the performances will commence from 6 PM till 10:30 PM. About 150 artisans will set up their stalls in the event after two years. The entry is free so we appeal to people to visit the event and give their support to the artists and artisans participating in the event,” added Verma.
