Will take steps to raise tax from political party offices: Mayor
Mayor Sunil Uniyal ‘Gama’ has said that steps would be taken soon to raise the amount taken as rent or tax from the offices of the national political parties based in the city. Though the matter has been doing the rounds for some time, it had not found a mention in course of the first meeting of the civic body’s new board. Notably, the national political parties have not been paying anything by way of rent or tax to the civic body despite enjoying prime land in the upscale localities of the city. When quizzed over the matter by this correspondent, the civic body officers had assured that something would be done this time to make the political parties to pay the right amount of tax.
It is also learnt that the national political parties have been allowed to run their offices without paying anything by way of property tax. Besides, the rent being paid by the political parties for their offices to the MCD is very minimal and the amount has not been revised for decades. On the other hand, the municipal corporation of Dehradun (MCD) have been saying that a major source of their revenue comes from the tax collected from the houses and the commercial properties. They repeatedly appeal to the house tax payers to pay the taxes on time. However, they are mum on the matter of raising the tax when it comes to the offices of the political parties operating in the city.
Queried over the matter, the mayor Sunil Uniyal ‘Gama’ said, “The issue is under our consideration now. We would soon do something on it,” he said.
It is pertinent to mention here that after the self-assessment system had been introduced for property tax in 2014, MCD had sent notices to the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) state office on Balbir Road, Congress Bhawan on Rajpur Road and the Uttarakhand Kranti Dal (UKD) office on Kacheri Road which is also under dispute. However, the parties had not even cared to respond to the notices.
Interestingly, BJP is paying an unbelievable Rs 500 for its Mahanagar office adjacent to Parade Ground for a year. The rent for the Samajwadi Party office situated on a corner of Parade Ground is Rs 250 per month which amounts to Rs 3,000 a year. Similarly, the rent for the Bahujan Samaj Party office on Darshanlal Chowk is Rs 192 per month which amounts to Rs 2304 a year.
