
Voting ends peacefully for municipal polls in Roorkee
The polling for the elections to positions in the Municipal Corporation of Roorkee concluded peacefully with about 57 per cent polling being recorded by 4 pm. Polling for the post of councilors in 40 wards and the mayor began at 8 am on Friday.
About 1.40 lakh persons exercised their franchise to elect councilors and mayor of the city. Extensive security arrangements were made at all 149 polling booths to ensure free and fair election. There were no reports of any major disturbance with 57 per cent polling being recorded till 4 pm.
The polling centres like the one at BSM Inter College was inspected by the District Magistrate Deependra Kumar Chaudhry, senior superintendent of police, Senthil Avoodai Krishnaraj S, additional district magistrate, Bhagwat Kishore Mishra, and joint magistrate Nitika Khandelwal.
With the conclusion of polling, the fate of the candidates has been sealed for now and will be revealed when the counting of votes takes place on November 24.
Ten candidates are contesting the election to the position of mayor while 212 candidates are in the fray for the position of municipal councillors.
For the post of mayor, the contest was expected to be triangular with the BJP and Congress candidates being considered the stronger ones. The Haridwar SSP said that necessary measures had been put in place to ensure peaceful voting for the municipal elections.
