Dhela resident lock Corbett gate in support of their demand
Demanding that their village be kept out of the eco-sensitive zone, residents of Dhela village started their protest demonstration by locking the Dhela gate of Corbett national park here on Sunday. Due to the protest by visitors, a number of people who had come to visit Corbett had to wait for hours before turning back disappointed. Meanwhile, supporting the villagers, the Block Pramukh, Rekha Rawat also sat to demonstrate with them and averred that their demands were valid.
On Sunday morning, a number of villagers reached the Dhela gate of the national park. Accusing the State government of acting in an autocratic manner, the villagers alleged that all developmental works in their village had come to a stop since it was made a part of the eco-sensitive zone. The youth of the village are not finding any new employment which has increased the chances of them migrating away from the village. Considering the discontent of the angry villagers, in the afternoon, the sub divisional magistrate Harigiri Goswami and the park warden Shivraj Chandra reached the site to talk to the protesting villagers. The officials informed the villagers that the meeting of the state wildlife board is proposed to be held in Dehradun on November 27. They further said that the demand of the villagers to remove Dhela village from the eco-sensitive zone will also be raised in this meeting. On receiving this assurance from the officials, the villagers withdrew their demonstration till November 27. Following the end of the protest, the Dhela gate of Corbett was opened in the late afternoon allowing the entry of visitors to the Dhela and Jhirna zones of the national park.
