Demanding cancellation of the license of meat shops in areas under the jurisdiction of the municipal corporation, a Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader tried to self immolate in protest on Sunday though the district police were able to foil his attempt. The VHP leader suffered 20 per cent burns and was referred to higher medical centre from the district hospital.
On Sunday morning, the district coordinator of Dharma Prachar Vibhag of Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Charanjeet Pahwa made an attempt to commit self immolation near the rail bazaar chowki in Jwalapur in front of the police. For the past many days, he had been demanding closure of meat shops in Haridwar city.
Jwalapur police station in charge Amarjeet Singh told The Pioneer, “The VHP leaders had given a warning about self immolation against the meat shops running in the municipal corporation area. Today one of them attempted to carry out the threat at Ram trijunction in Jwalapur near rail bazaar chowki.
Our team immediatelyy took control of the situation and prevented the fire from causing serious injury. We are on the look out for the other persons of the VHP who may have instigated this act,” he said.
Notably, licenses have been issued for opening meat shops in the municipal corporation area and the Hindu leaders have for long been demanding the closure of these shops.
The VHP leaders had also submitted a memorandum to the urban development minister and Haridwar MLA Madan Kaushik in the past regarding the same.
