For the Kanwad Mela that is to start from July 17 and will end on July 30, the police personnel on duty will be stationed at their posts from July 15. A briefing will be conducted on the same day at Haridwar. Uttarakhand police are leaving no stone unturned to ensure smooth and secure conduct of this Mela with 200 CCTV cameras in Haridwar alone providing live footage. Routine checking has been tightened at railway stations and bus stations.
Director General (law and order) Ashok Kumar said, “We have done full preparation for the Kanwad Mela. The forces will be deployed at their stationed places on July 15. Routine checks are already being done at all required places. Bomb squads have already been told to do three times checking every day. CCTVs have been installed at all crucial places, let alone in Haridwar there are nearly 200 CCTVs working presently.”
When asked about the preparation for Shivratri at Neelkanth he said, “Neelkanth has emerged as one of the most popular place for Kanwadias. We are expecting nearly 30 lakh Kanwadias to be there on the eve of Shivratri. To ensure the security and safe conduct 1,000 police personnel will be stationed there.”
Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Nivedita Kukreti said, “In view of the Kanwad Mela we have divided Raiwala-Rishikesh area in to 22 sectors and five zones. SP Rural will be stationed there during this period and he will be directly supervising it.We will also keep an eye on those going to Mussoorie and found to be creating disorder.”
It is pertinent to mention here that Uttarakhand administration is expecting about three crore Kanwadias from all over the country especially from Haryana and western areas of Uttar Pradesh this year. As an initiative this year Kanwadias will have to register themselves by providing the information about their team leader and the vehicles they will be using to the local police stations in their home towns. A receipt or an official confirmation of registration will be carried by them.
