Crippling work at many Government offices, thousands of contractual workers recruited under Uttarakhand Purva Sainik Kalyan Nigam Limited (UPNL) continued with their strike on Tuesday.
Later, the agitating employees took out a candle march from Gandhi Park to Clock Tower under the banner of UPNL Employee Federation (UPNLEF). They threatened indefinite strike if the State Government continued to sit on their demands within a fortnight.
The stir by the contractual workers got a boost after a host of employees’ unions based in the state like State Vehicle Driver Union, State Joint Employee Council, Mountainous Employee Teacher Union, Uttarakhand Cultural Department Employee Union and Roadways Employee Union lent support to UPNLEF on their demands. Leaders of such unions lent support to the stir while addressing the agitating employees at Parade Ground. Later, members of UPNLEF’s Dehradun unit rallied to the Collectorate, met Dehradun district magistrate SA Murugesan and submitted a memorandum to him addressed to the chief minister.
Works at various depts have been adversely affected with the workers out in the protest gatherings and rallies.
Their demands include equal pay for equal work or their minimum wages being fixed at 21K.
