The Uttarakhand state government through various central and state flagship schemes is addressing the complex challenges of out-migration, unemployment, recurrent and severe ecological disasters that the mountain state faces. Under a comprehensive, medium term state level engagement strategy agreed at the highest level in both the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Government of Uttarakhand, UNDP is providing techno-managerial support to the State government to implement various flagship schemes and programmes and externally aided projects. The new resident representative of UNDP, Shoko Noda and additional country director Rakesh Kumar recently met the chief secretary Utpal Kumar Singh and other State officials here. During the meeting, the chief secretary sought further cooperation from UNDP pertaining to technical support and skilled human resources for the schemes implemented in Uttarakhand in the field of tourism especially implementation of the homestay policy, agriculture and horticulture sectors, especially medicinal and aromatic plants, climate change, and waste management. Singh said that the state has adequate sources of income available but to increase them, there is need for technical assistance from UNDP. He sought utilisation of UNDP’s experience in the state regarding the work done by it in different countries especially in the area of horticulture, climate change and disaster risk reduction.
Noda said that UNDP as a development partner of choice would like to consistently support the State in achieving sustainable inclusive growth. Kumar said that in the field of climate change, necessary efforts will be made by UNDP in continued support for implementation of the climate change action plan of the State. Planning secretary Amit Singh Negi, Agriculture secretary R Meenakshi Sundram and Skill Development secretary Ranjit Sinha also expressed their views in the meeting.
