With the first showers of the season, the arrangements of Municipal Corporation of Haridwar (MCH) have fallen flat. The traders and local businessmen of New Chandracharya Chowk Vyapar Mandal expressed concern over the water logging at the crossing near BHEL underbridge. They issued an ultimatum to the MCH for cleaning of drains so that water does not enter the shops of the traders in next rainfall.
Come monsoon, and the woes of local traders of Chandracharya Chowk increase. President of the Vyapar Mandal, Mridul Kaushik told The Pioneer, “In the morning following rain for three hours, there was water logging at the Chandracharya Chowk and all shopping complexes as well as commuters near to the crossing suffered due to it. People had to cross two feet deep water to reach the shops.” Kaushik also alleged that when the traders approached executive engineer of the department concerned, Mohammad Meesam for installation of water evacuation pump, he expressed his inability to do the same at that moment. When asked, Meesam said that by afternoon, water was drained through the pump and the rains had stopped.
Sunil Gulati, another trader said that the city is not prepared to handle monsoon showers since drain cleaning work has not been completed by the municipal corporation. “We informed the city mayor Anita Sharma and she has assured of expediting the process of cleaning of drains so that there is no water logging,” he said.
