State releases Rs 98 crore to clear dues of sugarcane farmers
In what may be seen as a New Year’s gift for sugarcane farmers, fund has been released on the instructions of chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat to government sugar mills for payment of dues to farmers.
According to information provided by official sources, on the directions of the chief minister, a sum of Rs 98 crore has been released to government sugar mills in the state for clearing the pending dues of the sugar cane farmers. This sum will be received by the government sugar mills in two to three days. Provision for this purpose has already been made in the supplementary budget.
It is pertinent to mention here that recently, the price of sugarcane was increased by Re one per quintal. Compared to neighboring Uttar Pradesh, the rate of sugarcane in Uttarakhand is more by about Rs two per quintal. It should be mentioned here that apart from being a cause of concern for the farmers, the pending dues of sugarcane farmers is also a political issue in the state. One of the allegations leveled by the Congress was that the state government had failed to clear the pending dues of the sugar cane farmers. The decision of the state government to release funds for clearing the dues of the sugarcane farmers will not only provide relief to the farmers but also nullify one of the points on which the government was facing criticism from the opposition.
