For his excellent investigative skills which helped in solving a complex case of murder of a woman in Rudraprayag district last year, the sub- inspector Jahangir Ali has been selected for ‘Union Home Minister’s award for excellence in investigation’. The director general (DG) police, Anil K Raturi and director general law and order Ashok Kumar have congratulated Jahangir Ali for the unique feat.
On April 7, 2017, a 44- year- old woman Sarojini Devi, a resident of village Kotbangar of Rudraprayag district, was murdered when she was alone at her home. After the murder, the culprits burned her body and buried it in a ditch behind her house. The case though belonging to revenue police as the area was under its jurisdiction, was handed over to regular police. A case was registered and SI Jahangir Ali was made the investigation officer (IO). There was no eyewitness of the murder and no significant evidences were collected from the spot. Ali solved the case with the help of informers and using electronic surveillance methods. He arrested Mukesh Thapliyal and Satyesh Kumar alias Sonu and a charge-sheet was filed in the court within the stipulated period of time. On December 4, 2018, the additional sessions and district judge, Rudraprayag in his judgment termed the crime rarest of the rare and gave death sentence to Mukesh Thapliyal and Satyesh Kumar. Similarly, the goldsmiths Avdesh Shah and Rajesh Rastogi were handed over three years’ rigorous imprisonment for buying the jewellery and other valuables from the murderers. The court also praised SI Jahangir Ali for his excellent investigation to solve the case promptly.
