Set targets to ensure 100 % water supply in rural areas before 2024: CM
Top priority should be accorded to works under the Jal Jeevan Mission as water supply to each home in the rural areas has to be ensured before 2024. Chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat said this while chairing a meeting in the secretariat to review the mission on Friday.
Regarding ensuring water supply to every home in rural areas, the CM said that annual targets be set for this purpose. Along with availability of water, full care should also be taken to ensure purity of the water. Places where the water quality is not proper should be identified and complete plans should be made for such areas, he said. The potable water, revenue and forest departments have crucial roles in ensuring the success of this mission. The departments concerned should work with mutual coordination to achieve the set targets, said Rawat.
It is pertinent to mention here that the government has set a target for facilitating up to 75 per cent potable water availability in rural areas in the next two financial years under the Jal Jeevan Mission. This year, the target is to facilitate drinking water supply to 3,58,880 homes under this mission. For the works under this mission, 90 per cent of the fund is provided by the Centre while the State government provides 10 per cent. During the year 2020-21, retrofitting and new scheme works amounting to a total of Rs 1,465 crore will be undertaken in the state. Works are being undertaken for 22 semi-urban areas to facilitate 16 hours drinking water availability daily in such areas. This project will benefit about 96,797 homes. The cost of this project is Rs 877.50 crore. Work has already started on 12 schemes out of 22 under this project, informed officials. The chief secretary Utpal Kumar Singh, secretaries Nitesh Jha, Sowjayna and other officials concerned were also present in the meeting.
