Second phase of nationwide artificial insemination of cattle to start on Aug 1
The second phase of the nationwide artificial insemination programme will begin from August 1 and continue till May 31 next year. A target of inseminating 50,000 successfully in each district has been set for this phase. Cattle rearers will be provided sexed semen of native cows and buffalo for Rs 100 each, informed the Animal Husbandry secretary R Meenakshi Sundaram.
Addressing the media, he said that the aim of the scheme is to improve cattle breed and enhance the livelihood of those earning from animal husbandry. The artificial insemination of cattle under the scheme will be facilitated free of cost at various centres across the state. If the first attempt is unsuccessful, up to three attempts will be facilitated free of cost. He further informed that this year the state government has set a target of artificially inseminating three lakh native cows and buffaloes with sexed semen for which only Rs 100 will be charged from the cattle rearer whereas the commodity costs about Rs 1,150.
