SCPCR asks Child Line to be serious on child beggars
The State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) has taken a serious note of the children found begging in the city. The commission has given instructions to Child Line Dehradun to look into the matter with utmost seriousness.
Despite the practice of begging being banned in the state, the children begging at various places of the city are not hard to find. As per the information received by the sources, the child beggars being spotted in the city are not from Dehradun alone. A large number of them is from Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh aside from some places of Jharkhand and Bihar, sources said. They further said that the child beggars are disposed to shift from place to place, making it tough to keep a record of them.
Quizzed over the matter, an officer from Child Line Dehradun said, “It is true that a majority of the child beggars spotted begging in the city is from other places. These children can be spotted during the weekends in the city. On some specific occasions, they travel to Haridwar with their parents or groups. It is tough to keep a record of them, but in spite of it, we from our side are trying our best to help these children out of the practice.”
Elaborating further on the matter, the officer said, “We take initiatives to educate these children. But it is hard for us to do so. It is important to understand that the child beggars are the soft targets even for their own parents. As per our experiences, they in most of the cases are forced to be engaged in begging. After some time when they find it easy to earn money in the process they get fully involved in it. It is very important that the people are made aware of the thing. If they stop giving money to these children the practice can be at least minimised. Besides, spreading this message among the people, we have also conducted an awareness campaign recently to let the people know that the money given by them to the child beggars is being used to boost crime.”
An officer from SCPCR said, “It has come to our notice that most of the child beggars being spotted in the city are not from here. A majority of them is from states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. We have instructed the Child Line to look into the matter. Besides, we would write to the Uttar Pradesh State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (UPSCPCR) to look into the matter with utmost seriousness and do something about it.”
SCPCR for strict action against people using commission’s name for admission
With the admission session underway, the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) has stated that strict actions would be taken against the people found using the name of the commission for admission of their wards in schools.
As per the information received, some schools have informed SCPCR about cases of parents using the name of the commission for their children’s admission.
Asked to comment on it, the officer SCPCR said, “We have received such complaints from some schools. It is a very serious matter and any person found using the name of the commission in the wrong way can face FIR to be lodged against him or her.”
