School suspends girl for one-day absence, admits error
A school in Roorkee barred a student from attending school for seven days only because she took one day leave due to illness. As this matter went viral on social media, the Education department issued a notice to the school. Responding to the departmental notice, the school administration has acknowledged its mistake.
Some students of Class XII in Saint Ann’s senior secondary school had been remaining absent from school for some days. The school informed the parents that those who were absent on Tuesday were barred from attending school from November 20 to 26. However, a girl student who was unable to attend school on Tuesday due to illness was also barred for a week. As the matter went viral on the social media, it also reached the the Roorkee deputy education officer Brijpal Singh Rathore. He issued a notice to the school, seeking a reply within three days. Acknowledging that the girl was not at fault, the school management stated that such an error would not be repeated.
Earlier, the girl student was unable to attend school on Tuesday. When her mother went to drop her to school on Tuesday, she was told the girl was not permitted to attend school till November 26.
When the woman informed her husband about this, he posted the matter on the social media. With the matter going viral, DEO Rathore issued a notice to the school’s principal and manager, warning that action would be initiated if the school did not respond within three days. The manager replied stating that barring the girl from attending school for a week was an error. According to the school authorities, some students were running absent frequently. The guardians of such students were informed but the desired effect was not seen. Hence, the school barred such students from attending school for a week, though the same was directed for the girl student in question by mistake.
