Relaxation in lockdown can worsen situation, opine locals
The considerable relaxation in the restrictions during the third phase of the lockdown can escalate the number of COVID-19 positive patients in Dehradun, opined the locals. The third phase of the lockdown which began on Monday with several people being seen violating guidelines including social distancing and wearing of masks in public places. “I went to buy some medicines at a chemist shop near Clock Tower when I noticed there was a traffic jam on the road and nearly everyone was going towards Paltan Bazaar. Some people also told me that they were so bored staying at home during the lockdown that they came to the market on foot just to entertain themselves. I understand that the government wants to make life of the people easier by providing relaxations but more than a month spent under lockdown would be worth nothing if the citizens keep loitering in public places for no valid reason,” said a store owner Rohan Dhyani.
According to some locals, instead of cooperating with administration during the current crisis, people are making the situation worse. “The government should have anticipated that people here are not meticulous in following the rules. Most people have this mentality that they would not get infected by COVID-19. To make the situation worse, the government has allowed the sale of liquor in the State. I think our government is being greedy by allowing the sale of alcohol during the lockdown as the worst crowding takes place around liquor shops. So far, this decision appears to be doing more harm than good, especially when the cases of COVID-19 are still rising regularly,” stated a local bank official Sharmistha Dimri. According to the locals, the relaxation in the third lockdown can escalate the chances of community infection of COVID-19, therefore the authorities should reconsider the decision of providing relaxation to the people.
