Once again a procession organised in the city resulted in traffic jams and chaos on the roads in Dehradun on Friday. Members of various organisations assembled at Parade Ground to rally and submit a memorandum to the President of India through Dehradun District Magistrate. The procession that these groups took out was neither properly organised nor was under the control of police department and hence resulted in traffic disturbance and multiple route diversions in the core area of the city.
At 11:30 AM, Doon Hospital Chowk being one of the busiest and most crucial routes leading to Doon Hospital, District Court and the offices of DM and Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) was jam packed. With citizens clueless about the preferable route they have to take, the area was in utter chaos.
According to the members of protesting groups, they were supposed to go to the DM’s office via Paltan Bazaar. For this, they applied for the permission, but the administration did not allow them to pass from the decided route and instead took them from Buddha Chowk to Doon Hospital Chowk and then finally to the DM’s office.
According to the official sources, though their protest rally was initially permitted, after the morning’s issue with the other community, they were stopped at Kanak Chowk and barred from going further. The members of the protesting groups cited their constitutional rights and went past the police to rally to the DM’s office in separate groups. Although, police and City Patrol Unit personnel tried to maintain the flow of traffic, the citizens had to face traffic congestion and inconvenience at various localities.
