National aims can be achieved through research, innovation & creative thoughts- President Kovind
Institutions like Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee are not only centres of education but are also centres of innovation and creativity, said President of India, Ram Nath Kovind while speaking at the convocation ceremony in IIT Roorkee on Friday. A total of 2,029 students were awarded degrees in the convocation ceremony out of which 309 are PhD scholars. The President was accompanied by his wife Savita Kovind.
With research, innovation and creative thoughts, one can attain national goals and facilitate welfare of mankind, said the President while presiding as chief guest at the convocation. He said that he was elated that IIT Roorkee was attaining such goals. The TIDES Business incubator, startup project based on new technology was assisting new companies in developing business. Notably Technology Incubation and Entrepreneurship Development Society (TIEDS) has been established to promote innovation and entrepreneurship in the region. He appreciated that the students were being enabled to share activities of academic institutions even as they were being encouraged to make decisions in creative thinking.
Kovind said that at present the number of girl students in technical colleges was comparatively less, so efforts were needed to increase the number of girl students in higher education centres. Then alone will the achievements be more beneficial. The President said that in 2018 Governors congregation it was stated that universities must adopt university social responsibility. It is good that students of IIT have discharged their responsibilities in community service. The students have identified five villages in which they are working towards cleanliness and skill development. They have also partricipated in Ganga Swachchhta campaign at Haridwar and Roorkee, fulfilling their social responsibilities.
The state chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat congratulated the degree holders, stating that it was the duty of an educated person to link technology with human behaviour. How to use the education received for welfare of the country must be every student’s goal. He said in the competitive times of today, stress comes naturally, so students must adopt PM’s message of doing Yoga. It gives energy and stress free life to a person. The PM has taken a vow of making India a $ five trillion economy and citizens must contribute towards the same.
In his welcome address, the state CM said that IIT Roorkee had a big name and had 35th position in emerging universities ranking in in world famous Time magazine. He said that ISRO was establishing space science stream in IIT Roorkee so that more research in the field can be taken up. He lauded the efforts of the institution in developing technique for earthquake early warning.
The union Human Resource Development minister Ramesh Pokhariyal Nishank said that one has maximum energy during youth and so the students had the best opportunity to utilise the resources of IIT for their development. He said IIT had proud history of 72 years which the students and faculties had maintained. He exhorted the students to realise the dreams of the PM by using technology.
The institute director professor Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi gave a detailed report of activities of IIT Roorkee.
Earlier, the President was received at Dehradun airport by Governor of Uttarakhand Baby Rani Maurya, CM Trivendra Singh Rawat, union minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, State minister for Higher Education Dhan Singh Rawat, Dehradun mayor Sunil Uniyal Gama, chief secretary Utpal Kumar Shingh, DGP Anil Kumar Raturi, GOC sub area major general Bhasker, Dehradun district magistrate Dehradun C Ravishankar and SSP Arun Mohan Joshi.In the afternoon, the president also visited Hariharashram in Kankhal and performed Rudrabhishek in Pardeshwar temple.
