Day care surgeries are fast gaining acceptance these days in India following which the patients are allowed to go home in 24 hours. More and more hospitals are now adopting day care surgery options to ensure better availability of beds for emergencies and treatment of the critical cases.
Max Hospital of Dehradun is the first in the state to offer day care surgery facility in nearly 35 operations, including those related to gall bladder, stone, hernia and thyroid.
“We are proud to be the first healthcare providers in the region to provide organized day care setup under various specialities. Day care surgeries are not just cost- effective for patients but they also give them option to return home by day’s end or in 24 hours,” said Dr Sandeep Singh Tanwar, vice- president and operations head of Max Hospital.
Dr Mohammad Atif Khan, a senior consultant, general surgery, said, “After the operation, surgeon, anaesthesiologist and nurse together visit the patient and share their phone numbers and also give the check list to be followed at home. And thereafter, the patients are discharged from the hospital.” In the span of six to seven months, 300 such cases have been successfully operated using the same, added the doctor.
Dr Jyoti Raina, a gynaecologist, shared the benefits of day care surgery. According to her, the patient gets minimal pain and chances of contacting the hospital- borne infection. “Besides, when the in-patients are less more out- patients are treated. Moreover, recovery gets faster as the patient gets love and care of his own people. This is why this is becoming popular fast. The people are going for the easier surgery option which is cost-effective too,” she said.
