Construction of the Saung dam will enable gravity based potable water supply to Dehradun district for more than 30 years. Further, construction of the proposed Jamrani dam multipurpose project will facilitate irrigation, potable water supply and electricityA meeting has been called in the Prime Minister’s office on July 11 regarding the Saung dam and Jamrani dam projects. Officials of the PMO and Uttarakhand state government will be participating in this meeting.
It is pertinent to mention here that the Saung dam and Jamrani dam, both are among the top priorities listed by Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat.Consistently making efforts to expedite work on these two project, the chief minister has has requested the prime minister Narendra Modi and Jal Shaktri ministry many times regarding this. During the governing body meeting of the National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog held in the recent past, the chief minister had strongly raised this issue. The chief minister himself is monitoring the process underway for meeting the various necessary official formalities for these projects.
According to the State Government, the Saung dam will prove to be a boon for supply of drinking water in the Dehradun district. Construction of this dam will enable gravity based uninterrupted supply of drinking water to the Dehradun district for more than 30 years. For this dam project, the hydrological clearance and inter state matter clearance along with the water portage system design inspection has been done by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee. Work is underway on the design, forest clearance, environmental clearance and other aspects for this dam project.
For the Jamrani dam multi purpose project proposed to be constructed in the Terai region of Uttarakhand, the technical advisory committee of the Central Water Commission has granted its approval. According to the State government, the construction of this project will help not only in facilitating irrigation and supply of drinking water but also generate electricity. For this proposed dam project too, the hydrological clearance, dam design, construction machinery and related works have been done. Further, the first stage forest clearance, TAC project and other works have also been completed. The process for environmental clearance and stage II forest clearance is currently underway, said official sources.
