Historical site at MCD
Board ignores proposal passed by it to install a life-size statue of Netaji at the site of his public address
Keeping the original names of some of its offices still displayed on buildings for their historical significance, the Municipal Corporation Dehradun (MCD) has been neglecting a site of historical significance on its campus. The ground inside MCD campus where Subhas Chandra Bose had addressed a public gathering on March 6, 1940 is being used mainly as a parking space for vehicles and old dumpers. This is despite the fact that the MCD board had passed a proposal for erecting a life-size statue of Bose at this site years ago.
The MCD board had passed the proposal to erect a life-size statue of Subhas Chandra Bose in its premises during its meeting on December 29, 2009. However, more than nine years later, nothing has been done to execute the decision of the board. Officials state that the original titles of the two main offices in the MCD-‘Nagar Palika 1937’ and ‘Daftar Municipality 1922’ (also written in Urdu) haven’t been removed or changed from the building because of their historical importance. However, the ground where Subhas Chandra Bose addressed the crowd has been neglected for years.
Speaking about it, the former leader of the opposition and four-time councillor in the MCD Ashok Verma said, “This proposal was passed in a board meeting in the year 2009. However, no steps were taken to build the life-size statue of our great leader Subhas Chandra Bose. Not only this, but there are also many other proposals like the building of schools, petrol pump and hospitals on the lands of the MCD that were passed but not even a single step was taken by any of the officials to execute the same.”
He further said, “All these proposals were passed for the good of the public. Like the life-size statue in MCD may have ensured the cleanliness of the place and park near it could have been good for the kids to play in. Also, the construction of the hospital and petrol pump could also have been a good source of income for the MCD but all the passed proposals exist on papers only. I believe that there is no point of conducting board meeting as the proposals passed are not being followed.”
When asked about it, mayor Sunil Uniyal ‘Gama’ said, “Every work cannot be completed fully. However, we will try our best to ensure that every proposal which is passed by the MCD board gets executed. About the life-size statue of our great leader Subhas Chandra Bose, we will bring the proposal in the next board meeting.”
