PITHORAGARH BY-ELECTION: Youth & women voters hold the key
53 per cent of the total electorate of 105711 are young voters below the age of 40 years.
The youth and women voters who are in considerable numbers in the Pithoragarh assembly segment would cast their influence in the result of the crucial by election.
In the election about 53 per cent of the total electorate of 105711 are young voters below the age of 40 years. Apart from youth the constituency has 52796 women voters which is almost equal to male voters whose number is 52917.
Incidentally Pithoragarh is one of the few constituencies in the state where the number of male and female voters are almost same.
In this by election, both Congress and BJP have fielded women candidates. The Congress candidate is Chandra Pant who is the widow of former finance minister Prakash Pant. Chandra Pant resigned from her job in the education department to take the electoral plunge. The strategy of the Congress party is to extract the electoral mileage by invoking sympathy of people for Late Prakash Pant. After initially dithering on selection of candidate, the Congress has given ticket to Anju Lunthi. Apart from being a protégé of local heavyweight and former MLA, Mayukh Mahar, Lunthi has been in politics for quite some time. She is a two time Block President and belongs to an influential family.
Pritam request Harish Rawat to camp in Pithoragarh
Distances himself from last phase of campaign citing family issues
The Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chief Pritam Singh has requested the former chief minister and general secretary of the All India Congress Committee (PCC), Harish Rawat to camp in Pithoragarh till the end of the campaigning for the by election. In a letter to the senior Congress leader, Singh citing some family reason has said that he would be not available in Pithoragarh in last phase of the campaign. Incidentally Harish Rawat started campaign in support of Congress candidate Anju Lunthi on Monday.
The PCC president said that the Pithoragarh by election is very crucial for the party. It is pertinent to mention here that the PCC president has returned from campaign in Pithoragarh. He also took out a road show in support of Congress candidate there.
The deputy in charge of the state unit of Congress party Rajesh Dharmani is already camping in Pithoragarh.
The state in charge Anugrah Narayan Singh too would remain in Pithoragarh on November 22 and 23.
