The team of ‘Uttarakhand Pey Jal Nigam’ lifted the Shaheed Memorial cricket tournament trophy at University of Petroleum and Energy Studies ( UPES) on Saturday.
The tournament is organised to pay homage to the brave martyrs of the Indian Armed Forces belonging to from Uttarakhand for their supreme sacrifice.
This year fifth tournament of the series was organised in the memory of recipient of Vir Chakra (Posthumous), Naik Brij Mohan Singh from 9 Para who was resident of Village Tunwala in Dehradun. He laid down his life at a young age of 29 while fighting the enemy at ‘Mashkoh Sub Sector of Kargil, Jammu and Kashmir’ on July 1, 1999.
In the finals of tournament, the team of ‘Uttarakhand Peya Jal Nigam, Dehradun’ comprehensively defeated the team of the ‘Income Tax, Dehradun’. Batting first, the ‘Winners’ scored 164 runs in stipulated 20 overs losing only seven wickets and later restricted their opponents at 148 runs for the loss of 9 wickets.
In the ‘Award Presentation Ceremony’ held in the presence the martyr’s family, the Vice Chancellor, UPES, Deependra Jha paid floral tributes to the martyr. The Vice Chancellor and Subhrangshu Neogi, COO – Business Development, UPES later presented a cheque of Rs 151000 to the martyr’s mother. Informing about the tournament details director UPES, Arun Dhand said that 13 Teams participated in the tournament which was conducted by neutral umpires of the ‘Uttarakhand Cricket Association.
