Panchayat elections- Cong delegation meets State Election Commissioner
The delegation submitted its objection to the letter of the State Election Commission (SEC) in which it had directed the returning officers that the nomination of such candidates who have their names in the voting lists of more than one place should not be cancelled.
On the issue of many complaints regarding the names of the some candidates of the Panchayat elections figuring in more than one voting list, a delegation of Uttarakhand unit of Congress party met the state election commissioner, Chandrasekhar Bhatt.
The delegation led by Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Pritam Singh submitted its objection to the letter of the State Election Commission (SEC) dated September 25 in which it had directed the returning officers that the nomination of such candidates who have their names in the voting lists of more than one place should not be cancelled. The PCC president said that the order of the commission is surprising since the Representation of the People Act- 1951 has a provision of imprisonment of one year and penalty for any person whose name figures at two places. He added that the Uttarakhand Panchayati Raj Act-2016 also clearly mentions that a person cannot have his or her name listed in two places. The delegation submitted a memorandum to the State Election Commissioner and also handed over some documents as proofs.
The delegation of Congress included former MLA, Rajkumar, president of Mahanagar Congress Lalchand Sharma, district president Sanjay Kishore, state spokesperson Garima Dasauni and others.
Later talking to the media persons, Pritam Singh said that the SEC is acting like a puppet in the hands of the government. He said that though the state election commissioner has assured the Congress delegation to look into the issue, the Congress party has no expectations from him.
